In Kochi, the state government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to Sojish of Nettoor, following an order from the state human rights commission. The compensation, as per the order issued by the additional chief secretary of the home department, will be deducted from the salary of the former SI of Panangad in three equal instalments. The chairman of the commission, Justice JB Kosi, had issued the order after Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was allegedly beaten up by the former Panangad SI, Vipin AB. Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI without the appropriate authorization when he was receiving medical treatment. Subsequently, Sojish filed a complaint with the commission, leading to the order for a case against the SI and the payment of compensation. Despite a probe and disciplinary action resulting in a reprimand, no compensation was initially given. The government noted that the SI had been given an opportunity to present a defense before a final decision was made but failed to do so. Consequently, the government instructed the payment of Rs 25,000 to Sojish.
